Since there was no ID for the second victim, fingerprints were taken, and searched through the database. Joe and Mark were able to find a match. The man’s name was Jeremy Nelson, and he was a criminal when he lived. That brought up more questions. Had the killer known he was a criminal?

Or was it a coincidence?

Mark drove to Jeremy Nelson’s last known address to search for answers there. While he was gone, Joe visited the garage to check the progress on the car.

“Did you find anything, Max?” Joe asked the man under the steering wheel.

Max looked up and smiled. “Heya, Joe, yes. I did find three sets of fingerprints inside the car, one of which belonged to the victim. I have the report here, if you want to explore that. I also heard that the fight started at the car, but there’s no evidence that confirms that.”

“All right. What can you tell me about the victim?”

“Well, he was a heavy smoker. The ashtray was overflowing and there were butts on the floor. All of them were the same brand, True Blend. I sent them to the lab but I haven’t heard back.”

“All right, I’ll check the lab to see if they finished pulling the DNA.” The DNA probably wasn’t ready since it normally takes longer than a couple of hours.

Max removed his latex gloves.

“Anything else?” Joe asked.

“Other than he was a pig. There was a lot of trash in the backseat and trunk. I also found unopened packages with addresses belonging to other people. I made a list.” Max found his report and handed it to Joe.

“All right, I’ll check these out. Anything else?”

“Yep, this man had all of the tools of the trade. I’m pretty sure he’s the one who’s been breaking into homes around town.”

“Really?” Joe asked.

“Yes, they are on the table for further analysis.”

Joe glanced at the table and saw a rope, a flashlight, a key-lock kit, and a glasscutter. “Anything related to my crime scene?”

“I don’t think so, but if the weapon was in the car I couldn’t tell you.”

“All right, thank you, Max.”

“Not a problem. I’ll keep checkin’.”

“Okay. Let me know if you do find anything.”

“Will do.” Max picked up a sandwich and started eating.

As Joe was walking away, his phone rang. He answered. “Why is the photographer here asking when he’s getting his interview?” the captain asked over the line.

“Mark must have asked him to come in. He was the first on the scene. I’m coming in to talk to him.”

“All right, you do that. Make it quick, will you?”

“Yes, sir,” Joe said. He paused for a moment and then ended the call. He walked over to the station, which was a block away, and proceeded to interview the young man.

Adam Martin was 24 years old, young for the job, but had come highly recommended—according to his employee file.

“Adam, you know why you’re here, don’t you?” Joe asked him as he pulled his chair out from under the table.

“I’m thinking it’s because I was on the scene first.
